Ivan Aivazovsky. Meeting of the Brig Mercury with the Russian Squadron After the Defeat of Two Turkish Battleships. 1848. Oil on canvas. The Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Ivan was had always loved marine landscaping ever since he took a landscape class as a child. At the point in time he had just painted five paintings portraying famous russian battles. This being one of them.

This painting has an interesting use of space. It's focal point is very small and off center. I belive this is imatationilism. Another thing that is very promenant is his use of cool colors and how they let the slight bit of warm colors stand out. He also did a good job with texture. I feel as though I could almost touch the water and feel the wet on my hands.
