Study after Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X
Francis Bacon, 1953
Oil on canvas
153 × 118 cm, 60 × 46 in
Des Moines Art Center, Des Moines, Iowa
We know that this artist was born in 1909 and died in 1992 based on this we know he lived through world war 1 and 2. He also lived in England most of his life so he probably experienced a bombing. Other things he lived through were the sinking of the titanic, the first journey to the north and south pole, the debut of both star wars and James bond and The cold war.
I think it is a fine example of emotionalism. I believe the interesting use of space which causes the pope to appear to be floating in space but also sitting on a platform. I also believe that he used lines to create a person which seems complicated. I also believed he maneged to create a dark painting with warm colors.
